As state governments all across the nation look for ways to cut back on spending, there will inevitably be losses - but are some losses bigger than others?Washington DC has recently taken the somewhat controversial decision to scrap its periodic safety testing program in order to save $400,000 in this year's budget. Car safety tests are currently carried out in 19 states and many feel that the decision by the District of Columbia to scrap this inspection could cause others to follow suit leading to a serious safety concern on the roads.
Road safety advocates insist that now, more than ever, these maintenance tests are necessary as in these difficult economic times drivers will start to neglect tyre threads, brake pads and windshield wipers in order to save money in their own budgets.
Some estimates cite that up to 33% of many car crashes could be blamed on insufficient car maintenance and that putting off necessary repairs could become an increasing problem over the next year as consumers allow their safety standards to slip in the face of economic struggle
