There are many to argue to pluses of small cars - they're more fuel efficient, easier to park, easier to maneuver - but what about safety? Some are worried that these lighter-framed vehicles are more vulnerable to damage and a current road test has only further highlighted this concern.
A test carried out by The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety sought to examine the bumpers on 7 small cars to see how they hold up. Only 1 - the Smart Fortwo - earned an acceptable score.
The test simulated a full-width hit front and back at only 6mph and a front and rear corner hit at an even slower speed of 3mph.
The findings showed that the costs to repair damages of a small collision may far outweigh other characteristics that save owners money.
Of the 49 vehicles reviewed this year and 3 have received an acceptable rating for their bumper durability.
